Baltic Job Service OÜ provides organizations and individuals with a comprehensive range of services for the maintenance of green spaces, including hedge trimming.

Depending on the type of shrub, its age, condition, and the purpose of cultivation, pruning can be:

  • formative;
  • rejuvenating;
  • thinning;
  • hygienic.

To the casual observer, they appear very similar, but they are executed at different times, with different tools, and using various techniques.

Formative pruning

With its help, the shape and size of the bushes are maintained as desired. This is an essential operation in the care of hedges and other ornamental shrubs. They should be trimmed regularly, at least once a year. Some types of shrubs need to be pruned twice—once in the spring and again in the fall.

Formative pruning is done with garden shears: using them, the tips of the branches are trimmed to the required length.

Rejuvenating Pruning

When the growth of shrubs slows down, it indicates the need for rejuvenation pruning. The best time to carry this out is late winter to early spring. Typically, one-third to one-half of the branches are removed from the shrub. Depending on the type of plant, the branch is either cut off completely or left with a stub up to 15 cm long.

Thinning Pruning

Pruning is most often necessary when shrubs have not been trimmed for a long time, have become overly dense, and lost their ornamental appeal.

When performing this type of pruning, branches are more or less evenly removed from the shrub’s crown entirely. Typically, no more than one-third of the branches are cut. It is important to note that different types of shrubs tolerate radical pruning differently. In neglected cases, thinning pruning should be carried out gradually over a period of two to three years.

Sanitary Pruning

This is the most gentle type of shrub pruning: only diseased, broken, crooked, and weakened branches are removed. At the same time, the shrub is inspected to assess its vitality. Plants that are significantly aged and weakened are marked for planned removal.

Depending on the thickness of the branch, different tools are used for pruning — secateurs, loppers, or a pruning saw. The stump left after removing a large branch is treated with tree wound dressing.

The cost of shrub trimming depends on the complexity of the task: the height of the plant, its age, and the degree of branching. Working with thorny plants is more challenging; trimming tall shrubs requires the use of ladders.
